Judge Leonie Brinkema ordered the Trump administration to pause all actions related to the fund until further legal arguments are heard on June 12.

A United States federal judge has temporarily stopped President Donald Trump’s proposed $1.8bn “anti-weaponisation fund”, which was created to compensate people claiming they were unfairly targeted by government investigations.

Judge Leonie Brinkema ordered the Trump administration to pause all actions related to the fund until further legal arguments are heard on June 12.

The fund followed a settlement between Trump and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) over the leak of his tax records.

Critics argue the fund could be used to reward Trump supporters involved in the January 6 Capitol riot.

Several lawsuits have already been filed challenging the legality of the programme.

The Justice Department has not yet released any money or approved any claims under the fund.
