A pastor and his wife have reportedly died after a boat conveying church members capsized on the Odioma-Brass River in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The tragic incident occurred on Friday afternoon during a heavy downpour, with poor weather conditions said to have contributed to the accident.
It was learnt that the victims and other church members were travelling to Yenagoa for a church programme when the boat overturned.
Several passengers were reportedly rescued from the river, but the pastor and his wife were among those swept away by the water.
The body of the pastor’s wife was later recovered and deposited at a mortuary, while efforts are still ongoing to locate the pastor and other missing passengers.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Bayelsa State Police Command, DSP Musa Mohammed, said the exact number of casualties had yet to be determined as rescue operations were still in progress.
According to him, operatives of the Marine Unit of the Nigeria Police Force have joined the rescue mission to search for survivors and recover missing victims.
Also confirming the development, the Youth President of Odioma Community, Moses Inene, said local divers had been mobilised to assist in the search operation.
He disclosed that the corpse of the pastor’s wife had already been recovered, while efforts continued to locate the pastor.
Inene expressed optimism that the ongoing rescue operation would lead to the discovery of those still missing.
