Two men have been sentenced to 15 years in prison each by an Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for causing the death of a 12-year-old housemaid they brutally flogged.

Edidiong Edem, 22, a painter, and Alex Effiong-Etim, 21, a mechanic, were convicted following a plea bargain on an amended charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Justice Abiola Soladoye ruled that the custodial sentences would run from the date the men were first remanded in a correctional facility.

The court heard that the victim was beaten on her legs with a broom, leading to injuries that became infected with tetanus, ultimately causing her death.

The convicts were initially arraigned on February 25, 2022, and pleaded not guilty but later accepted the plea bargain agreement dated February 25, 2022.

Prosecution counsel Oluwaseun Adewoye told the court that the incident occurred in January 2022 at Military Estate, Eleko, Lagos State, and violated Section 224 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
