The Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said the PDP, which was once regarded as a dominant national political platform, has become a shadow of its former self.

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has said the Peoples Democratic Party is gradually drifting into political irrelevance across Nigeria due to persistent internal crises and lack of clear ideological direction.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Lagos APC spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said the PDP, which was once regarded as a dominant national political platform, has become a shadow of its former self.

Oladejo noted that the party’s leadership struggles, deep divisions and absence of a clear political vision have significantly weakened its influence in the country’s political landscape.

“Once presented as a national platform with lofty promises, the PDP has now set an unwanted record in the annals of Nigeria’s democratic journey — becoming a party that appears to be actively counting down to its own expiration,” the statement read.

The Lagos APC also criticised the PDP’s years in power, describing the period as one marked by poor governance and economic mismanagement.

“Nigerians still recall with shivers what the PDP represented during its years in power — a period many now remember as the better-forgotten era of the locust that set our nation back by decades,” Oladejo said.

According to the party, the PDP has failed to learn from its past mistakes and continues to grapple with internal discord and lack of unity.

“What Nigerians are witnessing today within the party is not accidental; it is the natural consequence of years of political arrogance, poor leadership culture and disregard for institutional discipline,” the statement added.

The APC said the crisis currently rocking the PDP reflects what it described as a cycle of self-inflicted decline.

“Indeed, the unfolding crisis within the PDP resembles a classic demonstration of the law of karma. A party whose governance philosophy many believed worked against the long-term interests of the Nigerian state now finds itself trapped in a cycle of implosion and self-inflicted decline,” the party said.

The Lagos APC further argued that the PDP’s influence in the state has continued to decline as residents maintain support for the governance approach of the APC.

“In Lagos State, the PDP’s presence has steadily diminished as the people continue to place their trust in the progressive governance and development-oriented policies of the APC,” Oladejo stated.

While acknowledging the importance of opposition in a democratic system, the party said the PDP has failed to effectively play that role.

“While we believe that a vibrant democracy benefits from responsible opposition, it is unfortunate that the PDP has repeatedly failed to rise to that role,” the statement said.

The Lagos APC therefore urged the PDP to address its internal challenges, noting that Nigeria’s democracy deserves a more organised and credible opposition.

“As a party grounded in progressive ideals and accountable governance, the APC in Lagos State will remain focused on delivering tangible development, strengthening democratic institutions and improving the quality of life for the people,” the statement added.
