Reacting to Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, Atiku, through his media adviser Paul Ibe on Friday, said every politician has the right to choose a party.

Governors defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) are doing so for “personal survival” rather than political conviction, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said.

Reacting to Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, Atiku, through his media adviser Paul Ibe on Friday, said every politician has the right to choose a party.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain described the 2027 general election as a referendum on President Bola Tinubu and the APC, warning that political realignments do not indicate the ruling party’s popularity.

Atiku said the growing number of opposition governors joining the APC reflects pressure and intimidation, not party strength. He accused Tinubu’s administration of using state institutions against political opponents in a bid to create a one-party state.

“This government fears accountability. It fears credible elections. It fears the people,” he said. “Governors may defect for personal survival. Nigerians are defecting in their millions because they want survival.”

He questioned what the APC would campaign on in 2027, asking, “What will the APC campaign on — hunger? hardship? hopelessness?”

Atiku urged citizens not to mistake defections for popularity and warned against trading votes. “Do not trade your future. Do not mortgage your children’s tomorrow. In 2027, the people will have their say—and their will shall prevail.”
