The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, on Monday voiced his strong disapproval of open cattle grazing in Ibadanland.
He made the statement following a meeting with members of the Olubadan-in-Council and the executive members of the Ijaye Farm Settlers Association at the Olubadan Palace, Oke-Aremo, in Ibadan North Local Government Area.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Gbenga Ayoade, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Ladoja said, “Open cattle grazing is not only illegal but also prohibited, both in Ibadanland and across the state.”
The paramount ruler warned all cattle rearers to stop open grazing to avoid legal action, adding that anyone caught violating the law would be arrested and prosecuted.
“We will not stand by while Fulani herdsmen kill farmers, harm their children, assault their wives, and destroy their farms, which are their means of livelihood,” he said.
He also urged Ibadan Mogajis, Baales, and other traditional titleholders to remain vigilant in their domains and ensure adequate security of lives and property to avoid sanctions from the palace.
The Olubadan further called on residents to promptly report to law enforcement authorities whenever they observe the presence of Fulani herdsmen, kidnappers, or other criminal elements in their communities.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Ijaye Farm Settlers Association, David Olatunji, lamented the frequent attacks by Fulani herdsmen on farmers, which included killing their children, assaulting their wives, and destroying farmlands and produce.
Olatunji added that efforts to safeguard their farms had failed, as none of the offenders had been arrested or prosecuted despite repeated reports to police stations and other security agencies.
He appealed to the Olubadan and the State Government for support and protection against the destructive activities of the herdsmen.
Among those present at the meeting were Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola; Otun Balogun, Oba Kolawole Adegbola; Osi Olubadan, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi; Osi Balogun, Oba Olubunmi Isioye; Ashipa Olubadan, Oba Amidu Ajibade; Ashipa Balogun, Oba Dauda Azees; Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Muritala Akande; and Ekerin Balogun, Oba Akeem Adewoyin.
