The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed claims by former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi that the National Assembly rejected mandatory electronic transmission of election results, calling the assertion false and misleading.
In a statement on Saturday, APC spokesman Seye Oladejo described Obi’s remarks as “hastily amplified” and sensational, ignoring the facts. Obi, on Thursday, criticised the Senate’s alleged rejection of electronic transmission, calling it a “grave setback to Nigeria’s democracy” and “an unforgivable act of electoral manipulation.”
The Lagos APC argued that Obi’s public commentary showed “unpresidential, unstatesmanlike and unstable” behaviour, unbecoming of someone aspiring to lead the country.
“The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken note of recent clarifications by Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, which reaffirm the Senate’s long-standing support for the use of technology, including electronic transmission of election results, in line with the Electoral Act and the operational capacity of INEC,” the party said.
“These clarifications categorically debunk the false narrative that the Senate rejected electronic transmission of results—a claim hastily amplified by Peter Obi without regard for the facts,” the statement added.
Oladejo emphasised that the Senate never opposed electronic transmission but acted to ensure that the deployment of technology during elections aligned with INEC’s technical readiness.
“Contrary to Peter Obi’s claims, the Senate did not oppose electronic transmission of results. It acted responsibly to strengthen the legal framework and ensure credible, secure elections. Misrepresenting this as ‘rejection’ is either a profound misunderstanding or deliberate distortion for political gain,” he said.
The Lagos APC also accused Obi of seeking to discredit the electoral process and fuel division, warning that such conduct threatens national stability.
“Any discerning observer may ask why Peter Obi and his allies persistently attempt to undermine confidence in Nigeria’s democracy. This behaviour is neither accidental nor harmless. It fuels mistrust, stokes division, and prioritises personal ambition over national stability,” Oladejo said.
He further noted that Obi has a pattern of making unfounded comments on legislative, economic, and policy matters, often using selective statistics or half-truths, which erodes confidence in his public statements.
The party condemned Obi for consistently portraying Nigeria negatively, especially on international platforms, which it said harms investor confidence and national morale.
“Nigeria deserves leadership rooted in diligence, emotional intelligence, and genuine patriotism. Once again, the facts have spoken—and once again, Peter Obi got it wrong,” Oladejo concluded.
