Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has called on Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to reconcile with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as political tensions continue to rise in the state.
During an interview with ARISE NEWS on Tuesday, Fayose advised Fubara to approach disagreements with humility, stressing the importance of acknowledging the support of political mentors. “Fubara and other leaders derive their strength from those who helped them,” he said.
Fayose cited Kogi State as an example of leadership guided by gratitude and cooperation.
“Look at Kogi. Governor Yahaya Bello is treated with respect because he gave others their platforms. Leaders who remember this rarely face internal crises,” he said.
Recalling advice he once gave his successor in Ekiti, Fayose added, “I told my governor that no matter past disagreements, it’s important to cooperate with those who gave you a platform. Fayemi thanked me for that advice.”
Fayose also weighed in on the controversy surrounding the “001” title in Rivers politics, urging Fubara not to challenge Wike’s influence. “There is a distinction between the office and the title of 001. Struggling over it only worsens tensions. Even if Wike asserts leadership, Fubara should manage the situation wisely,” he said.
He appealed directly to Fubara to prioritise reconciliation and uphold both his constitutional responsibilities and the respect due to political mentors. “I’m urging you, Governor Fubara, go and make peace,” Fayose said.
The comments come as the Rivers State House of Assembly moves toward impeaching Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu. Last Thursday, 27 lawmakers cited alleged offences including the demolition of the Assembly complex, unauthorised spending, and defiance of a Supreme Court ruling on legislative autonomy.
Fubara has yet to receive official notice of the proceedings, while two pro-Wike lawmakers have called for the process to be halted.
