Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has denied reports that the United States targeted him during recent airstrikes on terrorists in Sokoto State.

Gumi said a widely circulated old video, in which he warned of threats to his life, referred to Boko Haram, who allegedly tried to kill him in 2012. He added that his life is currently not at risk and credited God with saving him from past attacks.

He wrote: “There is fake news circulating that falsely claims I said I was targeted by a US attack on Nigerian soil, or something similar.

“I never said this, nor did I ever consider it a possibility. I am living comfortably at home with my family, without fear, intimidation, or anxiety.

“The misunderstanding likely stems from a lecture I gave at the mosque, in which I recounted that in August 2012, Boko Haram allegedly planned to eliminate me.

“The two individuals sent to carry out the attack were killed instantly when the bomb detonated in their hands near my house.

“I urge all news agencies that reported this false story to publicly retract it and issue an apology.”
