Borno South Senator, Ali Ndume, has urged the Federal Government to scale down certain discretionary expenditures, including National Assembly activities, in order to redirect funds toward tackling Nigeria’s growing insecurity.

Speaking on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Ndume proposed that lawmakers could meet less frequently, suggesting a quarterly sitting schedule with salaries adjusted to match.

He emphasised that government spending should prioritise sectors that directly benefit the majority, especially public safety, rather than areas with limited impact.

“Urgently, we must discard everything as far as I am concerned, and if necessary, shut down some discretionary services, starting with the National Assembly. You can cut it off and ask us to sit maybe once a quarter,” Ndume said.

The longest-serving senator also raised concerns over ongoing recurrent and overhead costs, despite the 2025 budget not being fully implemented.

“We sit for some time depending on our workload, and are paid accordingly. Yet, the 2025 budget is not fully running, but recurrent and overhead costs continue. Who benefits? Less than five per cent of Nigerians, and it is a lot of money. So, why not shut down these things and use the funds to secure the people first?” he added.
