More than 60 people have been confirmed dead following a deadly flood that ravaged Mokwa town in Niger State on Wednesday.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that rescue workers continued to pull bodies from submerged homes and farmlands as the community reels from what residents describe as the worst disaster in the town’s history.

Many victims were reportedly caught in their sleep as the floodwaters swept through residential areas, destroying homes, farmland, and vital infrastructure.

“This level of destruction and loss of lives has never happened before in Mokwa,” said Malam Musa Ibrahim, a resident.

Though the cause of the flood is yet to be officially confirmed, locals suspect it may have been triggered by a release of water from the Kainji Dam.

Emergency responders and volunteers are still searching for missing persons, while hundreds have been displaced.

Chairman of Mokwa Local Government Area, Hon. Jibrin Abdullahi Muregi, confirmed the rising death toll and appealed for urgent support from the Niger State Government and federal agencies.

“This is a tragic day for us. We are overwhelmed by the destruction and the high number of lives lost,” he said.

Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other relevant bodies are expected to visit the area for a full assessment and coordinated relief intervention.
