A fatal accident on Sunday morning along the Eko Bridge inward Alaka corridor has claimed the lives of two dispatch riders, following a devastating collision between two fully loaded Mack trucks.
According to reports gathered by KoikiMedia, the incident occurred when one of the trucks, identified by registration number T-10357 LA, reportedly lost control after the driver suspected to have been speeding and dozing off behind the wheel veered into another moving truck (registration number KJA 107 XM). The impact caused a 20-foot container to dislodge and fall directly onto the two dispatch riders traveling in the same direction, killing them instantly.
A statement released by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), confirmed the tragic development. LASTMA personnel, who were conducting a routine patrol under the bridge, responded swiftly to the scene.
One of the truck drivers was found injured and was promptly rushed to the hospital by officials of the Lagos State emergency ambulance service. However, the other two drivers involved in the crash fled the scene before authorities could intervene.
In response to the accident, LASTMA officers secured the affected section of the bridge and diverted traffic via Costain Roundabout toward the National Stadium to ensure the safety of other road users and prevent further chaos.
Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, General Manager of LASTMA, expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims. He lamented the avoidable nature of the tragedy and called for increased vigilance and responsibility among truck drivers and operators of articulated vehicles. He also emphasized the agency’s commitment to intensifying road safety campaigns across Lagos.
“Efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the fleeing drivers,” Bakare-Oki stated, assuring the public that justice will be pursued.
Emergency agencies present at the scene included the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), and personnel from the Iporin Division of the Nigeria Police Force.
The tragic event has sparked renewed calls for strict enforcement of safety protocols and monitoring of heavy-duty vehicles across Lagos roads.
