Security analyst Bakatsine described the demand as “crushing” for a community that has endured over a decade of attacks

Residents of Mai Tukunya in Dansadau district, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, have begun fleeing their homes after armed bandits issued a final ultimatum: ₦10 million, an AK-47 rifle, and three Honda motorcycles to spare the village.

Security analyst Bakatsine described the demand as “crushing” for a community that has endured over a decade of attacks.

“Farms are abandoned, businesses collapsed, livelihoods destroyed. Hunger and fear have replaced hope,” he said.

A displaced resident said survival left them no choice. “Entire families, children, mothers, the elderly, had to leave their homes behind,” they said.

Many trekked for hours, some observing the Ramadan fast, facing exhaustion and uncertainty. Those who stayed risked life-threatening danger.

Bakatsine warned that Mai Tukunya’s plight is part of a wider regional crisis. “Across the area, insecurity has emptied once-thriving communities as fear takes over.”
