We Have 2,000 Staff for 240 Million Nigerians, NAFDAC Boss Decries

The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has expressed concern over the agency’s shortage of personnel, saying the current workforce is insufficient to effectively regulate products consumed by more than 240 million Nigerians.

Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday, Adeyeye disclosed that NAFDAC operates with only about 2,000 staff nationwide.

She compared the situation to Indonesia, which has a population of about 280 million people and employs roughly 20,000 regulatory workers.

According to her, while NAFDAC is not seeking a workforce as large as Indonesia’s, the agency urgently requires at least 5,000 additional employees to improve its operations and expand its reach across the country.

The NAFDAC boss also called for increased government support and funding for the Federal Task Force established to assist the agency’s enforcement activities.

She explained that although the Federal Task Force C34 Bill was enacted in 2004, it has never received financial backing.
Adeyeye expressed optimism that the Federal Government would address the agency’s staffing and funding challenges, noting that discussions have already been held with the Minister of Finance.

She added that the Federal Task Force works with task forces in all 36 states to strengthen enforcement efforts and safeguard public health nationwide.
