WAEC, NECO Fee Hike Suspended as FG Begins Stakeholder Consultation

The Federal Government has suspended its planned increase in registration fees for WAEC and NECO examinations scheduled for 2027.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Federal Ministry of Education said the June 18, 2026 approval for the fee adjustment had been withdrawn to allow for broader consultations with stakeholders.

The ministry explained that the proposed increase was driven by rising costs of conducting national examinations, including logistics, security, printing, and technology.

Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be put on hold pending further review.

The government had earlier approved a new fee of N50,000, up from N27,500, but the move attracted criticism from students, parents, and other groups.

The ministry said it would engage examination bodies, state education ministries, school proprietors, parents’ associations, labour unions, and other key stakeholders before making a final decision on the proposed fee review.

Officials stressed that the consultation process is aimed at ensuring that any policy change is fair, transparent, and in the best interest of students.

The Ministry of Education assured Nigerians that students’ welfare and access to quality education remain top priorities and pledged to keep the public informed throughout the review process.
