US House Approves Total Cut of Nigerian Aid Over Christian Persecution Concerns

The United States House of Representatives has adopted an amendment to withhold 100 percent of U.S. foreign aid to Nigeria until the country takes definitive steps to address systemic violence and protect religious minorities.

Sponsored by Representative Gregory Steube (R-Fla.), the amendment was approved by a voice vote on Wednesday.

It was added to the fiscal 2027 State Department spending bill, which subsequently passed the House in a 217–209 vote along party lines.

The original bill proposed withholding 50 percent of Nigeria’s aid until the U.S. Secretary of State certified that the government was actively holding perpetrators of violence accountable. Steube’s amendment escalates the penalty to a total freeze on all assistance while maintaining those same certification requirements.

On the House floor, Steube argued that U.S. taxpayers should not fund a government failing to prevent the abduction and murder of religious minorities, also citing America’s rising national debt as a reason to tighten foreign aid.

Because the measure must still clear the U.S. Senate and be signed by the President before taking effect, U.S. funding to Nigeria remains unchanged for now.
