The United States military will introduce annual testosterone screenings for service members aged 30 and above, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced.
Speaking in a video message on Wednesday, Hegseth said the screening would be added to the routine health assessments already required for military personnel. Service members under 30 will also have the option to participate.
According to Hegseth, the programme is designed to help troops maintain their physical readiness and long-term health.
He stressed that any treatment resulting from the screenings, including testosterone replacement therapy, would be voluntary.
The initiative is part of the Pentagon’s broader effort to improve military fitness and performance.
Testosterone levels naturally decline with age, typically beginning in a person’s 30s or 40s.
However, the announcement has drawn criticism from some Democratic lawmakers.
Senator Tammy Duckworth and Representative Chrissy Houlahan questioned the policy and called for similar hormone screenings for female service members, citing concerns about infertility and overall health among military personnel.
