The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has praised the Sokoto State Government for its efforts to improve healthcare, education, and child protection services.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said investing in children is the best way to secure Nigeria’s future.
During an official visit to Sokoto, Russell toured the Rumbukawa Primary Health Centre and a Digital Village, where she met health workers, teachers, government officials, mothers, and young people.
She commended the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare of children and women.
Representing Governor Ahmed Aliyu, Deputy Governor Idris Mohammed Gobir highlighted achievements in the health sector, including the renovation of healthcare facilities, the recruitment of over 1,500 nurses and midwives, and the deployment of 2,440 Community Health Extension Workers across the state.
He also noted investments in education, water supply, and vocational training programmes for out-of-school children.
Gobir acknowledged that insecurity remains a major challenge affecting schools and healthcare facilities in some parts of the state.
He appealed to UNICEF and other development partners for additional support to rebuild damaged health and educational infrastructure.
Russell described her visit as inspiring and praised the dedication of frontline workers and community members working to improve children’s lives.
She said Nigeria faces significant challenges, but the country’s future is bright because of the talent, resilience, and creativity of its young people.
The UNICEF chief reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting governments and communities across Nigeria to ensure every child has access to healthcare, education, protection, and opportunities to reach their full potential.
