Donald Trump said he has instructed federal agencies, including the United States Department of Defense, to begin identifying and releasing government records related to unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and possible extraterrestrial life.
Trump did not clarify whether classified materials would be made public but said the files should contain “any and all other information connected to these highly complex, but extremely interesting and important, matters.”
In a post late Thursday on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he would direct the Secretary of War and other relevant departments and agencies to start the process of locating and releasing government documents concerning alien and extraterrestrial life, unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), and UFOs.
The announcement appears to follow heightened public interest sparked by recent comments from former US President Barack Obama, who said in a podcast interview that while aliens may exist, he had never seen one and was unaware of any being held in secret government facilities.
On Sunday, Obama issued a clarification on Instagram after his remarks went viral.
“Since it’s gotten attention let me clarify. Statistically, the universe is so vast that the odds are good there’s life out there,” he said.
“But the distances between solar systems are so great that the chances we’ve been visited by aliens is low, and I saw no evidence during my presidency that extraterrestrials have made contact with us. Really!”
Earlier Thursday, Trump criticised Obama over the comments, telling reporters the former president “was not supposed to be doing that” and suggesting the remarks touched on potentially sensitive information.
“He made a big mistake,” Trump said.
No confirmed evidence of intelligent life beyond Earth has been produced.
In 2024, the Pentagon released a report concluding there was no proof UFO sightings involved alien technology, attributing most cases to spy planes, satellites and weather balloons.
Despite this, Trump’s announcement drew swift support on social media and from lawmakers on Capitol Hill calling for the release of all related documents.
