Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has clarified that his absence from the recent Council of State meeting was with the approval of President Bola Tinubu.
Speaking on Tuesday during the commissioning of Access Roads in Sector Centre B, Dakibiyu District, Abuja, Wike dismissed reports that he boycotted the meeting in protest over the appointment of Prof. Joash Amupitan as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.
He explained that he had informed President Tinubu ahead of time about his unavailability due to other official engagements and directed the Minister of State for FCT to represent him.
“On Thursday, we had a flag-off, and I told the Minister of State, FCT, to represent me at the Council of State meeting. I had already told Mr President that I would not be available because of other engagements. We have to be careful when people spread unnecessary propaganda and blackmail,” he said.
The minister also dismissed claims that he was unhappy because his preferred nominee was not chosen for the INEC job, saying such speculation was unfounded.
“They said I did not attend because I was not happy that my own nominee was not taken. I work for Mr President. His judgment has always been focused on putting the country in the right direction,” Wike stated.
He added that the ongoing development projects in the FCT under his leadership were proof of his loyalty and commitment to President Tinubu’s vision.
“When you start delivering, the achievement will silence all critics. Today, they have nothing again to say,” he said.
Wike also commended President Tinubu for providing the right leadership that has made the FCT Administration’s achievements possible.
“I have always said that when you have the right leadership, you can achieve the expected results. President Tinubu has shown that leadership, and that is why people are talking about the progress we have made,” he added.
