Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
His spokesman, Daniel Alabrah, confirmed the development on Wednesday but gave no reason for the decision. He also did not disclose whether the governor plans to join another political party such as the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Following the governor’s move, all PDP members in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and commissioners in the state executive council have also resigned from the party.
Daily Trust learnt that Governor Diri is presently addressing members of the state executive council in Yenagoa, with the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, in attendance.
Earlier in the day, Diri and former President Goodluck Jonathan attended the commissioning of the Best Western Plus Hotel in Yenagoa.
Diri, who once served as a commissioner under Jonathan when he was governor, also worked as Principal Secretary to former Governor Seriake Dickson.
He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2015 and later to the Senate in 2019 under the PDP before emerging as governor in 2020. He secured re-election on the same party’s platform in 2023.
