The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) has denied claims by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that they’ve taken control of Babnusa, a key city in West Kordofan.
According to the SAF, they repelled an RSF attack on Tuesday, contradicting the RSF’s claim of capturing the city the day before. Babnusa is a strategic location, serving as a gateway to western Sudan’s Darfur region, which the RSF recently gained control of.
Babnusa is a key entry point to the Darfur region, which the paramilitary force took full control of last month, and western Sudan. Videos released by the RSF on Monday showed its fighters taking an army base in Babnusa after a weeks-long siege.
However, the SAF claims they’re still fighting in the city. The RSF “launched a new attack on the city, which our forces decisively repelled,” the army spokesperson said.
The army says battles are ongoing, with their fighters still inside the city, but the RSF has taken control of the army headquarters.
