Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has criticised governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) after a video showing them praising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu went viral.
The footage shows APC governors singing “On your mandate we shall stand” and giving the President a celebratory “three gbosa” applause during what appeared to be a governors’ forum meeting.
Reacting on X (formerly Twitter), Sowore called their actions disgraceful and said they reflect deeper governance failures.
“SHAMELESS STATE GOVERNORS. These are the ‘elected’ jokers holding Nigeria back, governing on a mandate that lacks legitimacy and dragging the country, Nigeria, in the wrong direction through their individual misgoverned states,” he wrote.
Sowore, a long-time critic of Nigeria’s political elite, has repeatedly questioned the legitimacy of the 2023 elections that brought Tinubu to power, alleging systemic irregularities and voter suppression.
Civil society groups and opposition figures have also expressed concern over the rising political sycophancy and lack of accountability among elected officials, particularly those aligned with APC. Critics say the display is insensitive given the economic hardship, inflation, and insecurity facing millions of Nigerians.
Social media users joined the backlash. @OBAF4U wrote: “These clowns in APC will never guarantee development, security and welfare of the ordinary people. They are in office to serve their selfish interests.”
@Youthinprocess said: “Shameless sounds loud, but elections are quieter, they reward who shows up… If we want better governors, we must out-organize them at the polls.”
@Everypolitics1 added: “APC is the house of Nigeria’s most corrupt governors. With 31 of 36 states under APC control, shameless misgovernance and endless corruption scandals are dragging Nigeria backwards.”
