The Nigerian Senate will reconvene for an emergency plenary on Tuesday, February 10, following public uproar over its recent passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2026, which removed the clause mandating real-time electronic transmission of election results.

The sitting, announced by Senate Clerk, Emmanuel Odo, comes as civil society organisations, opposition parties, labour unions, professional bodies, regional leaders, and youth-led movements continue to condemn the amendments.

“The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has directed the reconvening of plenary for an emergency sitting on Tuesday,” the statement read.

The session is scheduled to begin at 12 noon, with all 105 senators expected to attend.

Koikimedia reports that public anger peaked on Monday when former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, led hundreds of demonstrators to the National Assembly in Abuja under the banner of the National Opposition Movement (NOM).

Protesters called for transparent and compulsory electronic transmission of election results ahead of the 2027 general elections, while some demanded the resignation of Senate President Akpabio.

Security forces, including the Nigeria Police, Army, DSS, and NSCDC, were deployed to barricade the National Assembly gates to maintain order.

Addressing the crowd, Obi thanked Nigerians for participating in what he described as a lawful, patriotic call for reform.

He reiterated the need for election results to be transmitted electronically directly from polling units, citing examples from South Africa and Ghana as models for transparency.

“Election results must be transmitted electronically from the polling booth directly. Let people watch it,” Obi said. “We want the giant of Africa to be the true giant of Africa.”

The emergency Senate session now takes on heightened importance as public pressure intensifies for reforms that can restore trust in Nigeria’s electoral process.
