Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole has warned that electoral fraud poses the greatest threat to democracy.
Speaking on Monday during an interview on News Central, the lawmaker raised concerns over delays in implementing electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 general election.
Oshiomhole criticised practices such as vote buying and result manipulation, saying they erode the people’s mandate. He recalled his 2012 re-election as Edo State Governor, noting that he won across all 18 local government areas without handing out money to voters.
“I told the electorate that I wouldn’t engage in vote buying. If my opponent, who supposedly had funds to distribute, wanted to give them, they could take it. I had no money to give, but I promised to deliver development in full,” he said.
The former governor stressed that protecting the integrity of elections is essential for democracy and highlighted that current electoral laws already prescribe sanctions against vote buying and tampering with results.
