The Ondo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has thwarted an attempt by two visitors to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Akure, the state capital.
The incident occurred during a routine security screening at the facility’s gate lodge, where officers discovered about four grams of suspected Indian hemp hidden inside fresh tomatoes.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the NCoS said the substance was wrapped in watertight nylon and was allegedly intended for delivery to an inmate.
The suspects were immediately arrested in line with directives from the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, on strengthening security and protecting custodial facilities.
According to the Service, the suspects were later handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections, Ondo State Command, Oyewole Charles, praised the officers involved for their vigilance, professionalism, and swift response.
He reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to maintaining secure and humane custodial centres and to eliminating all forms of illicit drug trafficking within the correctional system.
The Command also warned members of the public, especially visitors to custodial facilities, that the Nigerian Correctional Service will not tolerate any actions that could compromise the security and safety of its centres, whether from inside or outside the prison walls.
