North Korea has test-fired couple of sea-to-surface cruise missiles into its western waters, according to local media, hours before United States President Donald Trump starts a visit to South Korea.
Foreign Media said on Wednesday that the missiles, carried out in the Yellow Sea on Tuesday, flew for more than two hours before accurately hitting targets.
North Korea’s top military official, Pak Jong Chon, oversaw a recent missile test, stating it achieved “important successes” in developing the country’s nuclear forces as a war deterrent, according to KCNA. The test aimed to assess the reliability of North Korea’s strategic offensive means and demonstrate its capabilities to potential enemies. Pak emphasized the importance of continually strengthening their nuclear combat posture.
The South Korean military detected North Korea’s launch preparations and reported that cruise missiles were fired from the country’s northwestern waters on Tuesday around 3 pm local time. South Korea and the US are analyzing the weapons and maintaining a combined defense readiness to respond to any North Korean provocation
Donald Trump has expressed interest in meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during his stay in South Korea, where he’ll also meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping. However, South Korean officials think a Trump-Kim meeting is unlikely. Kim has fond memories of Trump, but is only open to talks if the US drops its demands for North Korea to give up its nuclear arsenal. North Korea has avoided talks with Washington and Seoul since their nuclear diplomacy fell apart in 2019
