North Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations has said the country will not be bound by any international treaty on nuclear weapons, insisting that no outside pressure can change its status as a nuclear power.
The remarks by Ambassador Kim Song, reported by state media on Thursday, came as the United States and several other nations criticised North Korea’s nuclear programme during the ongoing UN review conference for the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
North Korea withdrew from the NPT in 2003 and has since carried out six nuclear tests, leading to multiple sanctions from the UN Security Council.
The country is believed to possess dozens of nuclear warheads.
Speaking at the conference, Kim accused the US and its allies of unfairly challenging North Korea’s sovereignty and current position.
“The status of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea as a nuclear-armed state cannot be changed by outside criticism or unilateral demands,” he said, according to the Korean Central News Agency.
He also stated that North Korea would never again be bound by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty under any circumstances.
Kim added that the country’s nuclear status has been written into its constitution, which also outlines the principles guiding the use of nuclear weapons.
North Korea has repeatedly declared that its nuclear weapons programme is irreversible and has vowed to continue strengthening its military capabilities
