Intense rainfall in Sri Lanka is hindering recovery efforts following a devastating cyclone that struck last week, claiming hundreds of lives and displacing tens of thousands.
The heavy rain, which dumped over 130mm (5.1 inches) in southern Sri Lanka over 15 hours on Thursday, has complicated rescue and relief operations. More heavy downpours are expected across southern and southwestern areas on Friday, further threatening the affected regions.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake described the disaster as the most challenging Sri Lanka has ever faced, stating that the rescue operation is the most difficult in the nation’s history.
This disaster is part of a larger regional catastrophe, with Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia also experiencing severe floods and landslides, resulting in 1,500 deaths.
The international community is rallying to support Sri Lanka, with India providing significant aid under Operation Sagar Bandhu, including medical personnel, relief materials, and infrastructure support. The United States has also pledged $2 million in emergency aid.
