French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Nigeria later this year on a State visit aimed at deepening relations between the two countries, French Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Marc Fonbaustier, has announced.
Speaking during France’s National Day celebration in Abuja, the ambassador said the visit would take place two years after President Bola Tinubu’s State visit to Paris.
He noted that both leaders would review the progress made in their bilateral relations and discuss new areas of cooperation for the future.
Fonbaustier said Nigeria and France enjoy a relationship built on mutual respect and equality, adding that both countries share common goals such as economic growth, job creation, environmental protection, and regional development.
He highlighted growing business ties between French and Nigerian companies, describing them as evidence of strengthening economic cooperation between the two nations.
The ambassador also emphasized collaboration in agriculture, particularly projects supported by the French Development Agency to improve food security and strengthen agricultural value chains in Nigeria and across West Africa.
On security, he said both countries remain committed to fighting terrorism and enhancing regional stability through continued cooperation and support for affected nations.
Fonbaustier further revealed that Macron’s connection to Africa was influenced by a six-month stay in Nigeria as a student more than 20 years ago, an experience that helped shape his approach to African affairs.
He described the Nigeria-France partnership as an important part of broader cooperation between Africa and Europe, focused on promoting development, stability, and shared prosperity.
