A Kano State High Court has sentenced a football coach, Hayatu Muhammad, to eight years in prison without the option of a fine for sodomising his underage player.

Muhammad, a resident of Sanka in Dala Local Government Area, was found guilty of committing the offence twice at different locations. He had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges.

During the trial, the prosecution counsel, Ibrahim Arif Garba, called five witnesses who testified against the defendant, while the convict served as the sole witness in his defence.

According to the prosecution, the offence contravenes Section 284 of the Penal Code Law.

Delivering judgment, Justice Musa Dahuru Muhammad held that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and convicted the coach on both counts.

He sentenced Muhammad to four years’ imprisonment on each count, to run concurrently, starting from the date of the judgment.
