Nollywood actor Jide Awobona has said he does not participate in every viral social media trend, explaining that he only creates content that genuinely interests and inspires him.
Speaking in an interview, Awobona discussed the inspiration behind his popular akara-themed skit, which gained attention during online discussions sparked by comments about small businesses made by Nigeria’s First Lady.
According to him, he noticed many people using artificial intelligence to create images related to the topic and decided to take a different approach.
“From my creative perspective, I saw people using AI to make pictures. I wondered why they couldn’t simply fry akara instead. So, I decided to do it for real, and that was how the idea came about,” he said.
The actor stressed that he does not join trends simply because they are popular. Instead, he chooses topics that resonate with him and match his creative mood at the time.
“I don’t jump on every trend. I only participate in those that connect with me. It also depends on how I feel at the moment,” he said.
Reflecting on the public response, the actor said he expected people to react to the skit but was surprised by the scale of attention it received.
“I knew there would be a reaction, but I didn’t expect it to become that big,” he said.
