Indian Court Rejects Activist’s Release from Hospital

An Indian court has rejected a request to release activist Sonam Wangchuk from a New Delhi hospital, where he was taken after spending more than three weeks on a hunger strike in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest movement.

Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, said his continued stay in the hospital amounts to illegal detention, claiming authorities have refused to discharge him or allow a transfer to a private medical facility.

The Delhi High Court upheld the government’s decision to keep the activist under medical supervision, stating there was no evidence that force was being used against him.

Another hearing in the case is scheduled for Friday.

Hospital officials said Wangchuk’s condition is stable but that he still requires monitoring and treatment. Doctors have recommended continued medical care, although he has reportedly declined some interventions.

The CJP movement, led largely by young people and students, is demanding reforms to India’s examination system and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

The group plans to march to Parliament as a new legislative session begins.
