The crash occurred during peak morning hours, raising serious concerns about safety measures and the Digital Signaling System on Nigeria’s busiest rail route.

Hundreds of commuters were left stranded on Monday morning after an Abuja-bound train from Kaduna collided with another train along the rail corridor, forcing the immediate suspension of operations.

The crash occurred during peak morning hours, raising serious concerns about safety measures and the Digital Signaling System on Nigeria’s busiest rail route.

Passengers reported that the train departed Kaduna on schedule but later ran into a stationary or oncoming train, bringing both engines to an abrupt halt.

“We were moving at a steady pace when there was a loud bang and the train suddenly braked,” one passenger said on social media. “We later realised we had hit another train on the same track. Everyone is shaken, but we are waiting for official word.”

Sada Malumfashi, another commuter, added: “The train jolted to a stop, flinging people across. Many passengers were hit, bleeding and severely injured.”

Some passengers reported that the train remained delayed for about 30 minutes before resuming to Kubwa, with minimal updates from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (@info_NRC).

While there have been no confirmed fatalities, preliminary reports indicate significant damage to the train engines.

Emergency teams and security personnel were deployed to evacuate passengers and secure the scene.
