Flood Ravages Edo Community, Destroys Homes and Graves

Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in Igarra, the headquarters of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, destroying more than 20 houses, washing away graves, and claiming the life of a motorcyclist.

Residents said the flood submerged several homes for days and swept away graves located within residential compounds, including one near the Igarra Police Station on Okpe Road.

The residence of Taiwo Akerele, a former Chief of Staff to ex-Governor Godwin Obaseki, was also affected.

The areas most impacted by the disaster include Iretutu Axis, Pope Francis Road, Okpe Road, Market Road, and Rest House Road.

A motorcyclist who was carried away by the flood was found dead two days later. A resident, Aliyu, described the incident as unfortunate, saying the victim could not survive the strong floodwaters.

Ward 1 Councillor Asebe Rabi described the flooding as devastating, noting that many residents lost property and sources of livelihood.

Akoko-Edo Local Government Chairman, Alabi Oshionogue, said the State Emergency Management Agency had been informed and that efforts were underway to assist affected residents.

He added that officials had been directed to clear blocked drainage channels and remove debris deposited by the flood to prevent further damage.

Authorities say they are working to provide relief to victims and reduce the risk of future flooding in the area.
