Federal Government Signs AI Agriculture Agreement with Morocco

The Federal Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Morocco to introduce a satellite- and artificial intelligence-powered agricultural monitoring system aimed at improving food security and agricultural planning across Nigeria.

The agreement was signed at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Ben Guerir, Morocco, by Deputy Chief of Staff to the President (Office of the Vice President), Ibrahim Hadejia, on behalf of Nigeria, alongside representatives of OCP Africa and Ground Truth Analytics.

The partnership will launch Nigeria’s first satellite-powered national crop monitoring system under the National Agro-Productivity System (NAPS).

The platform will provide federal, state, and local governments with real-time information on agricultural land use, crop distribution, production levels, and potential food security risks.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Hadejia said Nigeria must not only adopt modern agricultural technologies but also develop the capacity to improve and adapt them to local conditions.

The new platform will use satellite imagery and artificial intelligence to monitor farms, identify crops, track growth stages, and estimate yields.

Officials say the technology will help government agencies make better decisions on agricultural planning and food security.

Marion Moon, Executive Secretary of the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit, said the initiative was designed to close information gaps that often make it difficult for policymakers to accurately monitor agricultural production during planting and harvest seasons.

Ground Truth Analytics Chief Executive Officer, Driss Kitane, said the system can automatically analyse satellite images to identify farms and monitor crops without manual input.

He added that all data generated through the platform would remain under Nigeria’s control and be stored on local servers.

The project will be rolled out in phases, beginning with selected states before expanding to other agricultural regions across the country.

It is expected to strengthen food production planning and improve Nigeria’s ability to respond to food security challenges.
