Workers under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over unresolved labour and welfare concerns, warning that industrial action may follow if their demands are not addressed.
The notice, which took effect on January 7, 2026, was issued by the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC), FCT Administration, in a statement dated January 8 and jointly signed by JUAC President Comrade Rifkatu Iortyer and Secretary Comrade Abdullahi Umar Saleh.
JUAC said the ultimatum was served on the FCT minister and copied to key officials, including the Minister of State for FCT, the Chief of Staff to the minister, the Head of Service, and the Director of Security Services.
The unions stated that the action followed repeated unsuccessful engagements with management.
They cited issues including the non-release of approved overhead costs for six months in 2025 and unpaid wage award arrears spanning five months.
“Our members can no longer endure the continued denial of their legitimate entitlements,” the statement said.
Other concerns raised include alleged irregularities in the promotion process, with the recent examination reportedly recording a 22.5 per cent pass rate, as well as the non-remittance of pension contributions and National Housing Fund deductions since May 2025.
Staff also complained of intimidation, harassment, and restrictions on phone use by FCT Geographic Information System employees.
JUAC further alleged non-payment of enforcement officers, street sweepers, and cleaners under the Abuja Environmental Protection Board and Satellite Development Services, alongside unpaid hazard and rural allowances for health workers.
The unions criticised the extension of tenure for retired directors and permanent secretaries, the centralisation of salary preparation, and the refusal to grant financial autonomy to departments and agencies.
JUAC said the ultimatum was issued in line with labour laws and urged affiliate unions to sensitise members and remain alert pending the government’s response.
“We urge all comrades to remain united, law-abiding, and resolute as we pursue fairness, justice, and improved welfare for workers in the FCT Administration,” the statement concluded.
