Describing the allegations as “groundless” and “fabricated rumours,” the embassy responded to a bill recently introduced in the United States Congress accusing Chinese enterprises of funding terrorism in Nigeria

The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has dismissed claims that Chinese mining companies are involved in illegal operations or pay “protection money” to local militia groups.

Describing the allegations as “groundless” and “fabricated rumours,” the embassy responded to a bill recently introduced in the United States Congress accusing Chinese enterprises of funding terrorism in Nigeria.

In a statement released Thursday evening on its official X account, the embassy expressed “firm opposition and strong dissatisfaction” with the claims, noting that Chinese companies in Nigeria have themselves often been targets of terrorist attacks.

The embassy stressed that the Chinese government maintains a “zero tolerance” policy for any citizen or enterprise engaging in illegal activities abroad. It added that most Chinese mining companies in Nigeria have maintained exemplary compliance with local laws, contributing to community development, environmental protection, and job creation.

Accusing the sponsors of the U.S. bill of spreading false information, the embassy reiterated China’s respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and commitment to lawful bilateral mining cooperation.

The statement called on all parties to stop circulating rumours and urged Nigerians and the media to assess China-Nigeria mining collaboration objectively, warning against attempts by individuals with “ulterior motives” to undermine the relationship between the two nations.
