Britain Reviews TikTok’s Efforts to Protect Children From Harmful Content

Britain’s communications regulator, Ofcom, has launched an investigation into whether TikTok is doing enough to protect children from harmful online content under the UK’s Online Safety Act.

According to Ofcom, the probe will examine whether TikTok has complied with its legal obligations, with particular focus on the platform’s age-verification system.

The regulator said it is assessing whether there are reasonable grounds to believe the company has failed, or is failing, to meet child safety requirements.

TikTok, owned by Chinese technology company ByteDance, said it is confident it complies with the law.

The company stated that it uses strict age-appropriate policies and advanced age-detection technology to protect younger users.

The UK’s Online Safety Act was introduced to strengthen protections for children online.

The law requires technology companies to prevent minors from accessing harmful content, including material related to suicide, self-harm, eating disorders, and pornography.

Firms must also shield children from violent, hateful, abusive, or misogynistic content, cyberbullying, and dangerous online challenges.

Companies found to be in breach of the rules could face fines of up to £18 million ($24 million) or 10 percent of their global revenue.
