Tetsuya Yamagami, 45, admitted to fatally shooting Abe in 2022 in an attack that stunned Japan and drew global condemnation.

Prosecutors had asked the court to impose a life sentence, describing the assassination as “unprecedented in our post-war history” and citing its profound and far-reaching impact on society.

Yamagami’s defence lawyers had argued for a lesser sentence, seeking a maximum prison term of 20 years.
