The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for increased funding, improved staff welfare, and greater investment in electoral infrastructure as preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections gather momentum.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC), Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu, in Abuja.

He said adequate funding is essential for the commission to effectively carry out its constitutional responsibilities, which include conducting elections, voter registration, and the registration of political parties.

Amupitan noted that INEC operates offices in all 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and 774 local government areas, making its operations both extensive and costly.

He stressed that the commission also handles expenses related to election petitions and other electoral processes.

The INEC chairman expressed concern over the departure of experienced staff due to migration and warned that upcoming retirements could worsen the shortage of skilled personnel.

He said improved welfare packages would help retain qualified workers, boost staff morale, and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.

He also urged increased investment in electoral technology, infrastructure, and staff training, describing these as critical to improving efficiency and preserving institutional knowledge within the commission.

Reaffirming INEC’s commitment to credible elections, Amupitan announced that the presidential and National Assembly elections will be held on January 16, 2027, while governorship and state assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.

He also confirmed that the Osun State governorship election will take place on August 15, 2026.

Responding, RMAFC Chairman Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu commended INEC for its role in conducting elections since 1999 and pledged continued support for the commission.

He assured INEC of ongoing collaboration to help it fulfill its constitutional mandate and deliver credible elections in 2027.
