5,000 Ogun PDP Members Defect to APC, Join Ruling Party Ahead of 2027

At least 5,000 members and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The defection took place on Sunday at a political gathering in Ilaro, the headquarters of Yewa South Local Government Area, with most of the defectors drawn from the Ogun West Senatorial District.

The new APC members were formally received by Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who is also the APC governorship candidate, alongside the state chairman of the party, Yemi Sanusi.

Speaking during the event, former Ogun PDP chairman, Sikirullahi Ogundele, said he led several prominent members of the opposition party into the APC after spending seven years in the PDP.

Ogundele described his decision as an attempt to move away from what he termed “political slavery,” arguing that the movement of governors and other prominent politicians away from the PDP reflected the deep crisis within the opposition party.

He said remaining in the PDP would amount to political suicide for experienced politicians, insisting that the party had lost much of its political structure in Ogun State.

According to him, the defectors had joined the APC to contribute their experience and political networks towards the party’s campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.

“We have therefore moved away from the opposition party and embraced the APC, which we believe is the next victorious party in the state come 2027,” Ogundele said.

He also addressed the controversy surrounding the alleged origin of the APC governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi.

Ogundele described questions over Adeola’s Ogun roots as a recurring issue in the state’s governorship contests.

He cited previous controversies involving former governors Olusegun Osoba, Gbenga Daniel and Ibikunle Amosun, noting that similar claims had been raised against them before their elections.

He urged APC supporters to disregard the allegations and focus on mobilising support for the party.

Among those who joined the APC were former PDP publicity secretary Akinloye Bankole, Chief Sina Adejobi, Evangelist Soji Eweje, former Yewa North Local Government chairman Alhaji Ganiu Dada, popularly known as Obanibasiri, and former PDP woman leader Chief Kemi Adeyemi, alongside their supporters.

While presenting the APC’s broom symbol to the defectors, Sanusi assured them that their political experience and leadership roles would be recognised within the ruling party.

He urged the new members to return to their respective wards and commence grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.

Governor Abiodun welcomed the defectors and described their decision to join the APC as significant to the party’s political strength in Ogun State.

He assured them that they would be accommodated and fully integrated into the party.

“I want to thank those who have seen the light and have decided to be part of the APC. We value your courage and decision to join forces with us in the ruling party,” Abiodun said.

He called on the new members and existing APC supporters to work together as one political family, with the objective of strengthening the party’s structure across the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
