South Africa Raises Concerns Over New US Visa Restrictions

South Africa has criticised the United States over new visa restrictions imposed on some South African nationals, saying the measure could further complicate diplomatic relations between Pretoria and Washington.

The South African Foreign Ministry expressed concern over the restrictions announced on Tuesday by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, arguing that the decision appeared to be influenced by what it described as a mischaracterisation of South Africa’s domestic policies by fringe groups.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry said disagreements between the two countries should be addressed through established diplomatic channels and direct engagement between their respective governments.

“We maintain that challenges in our bilateral relations with the USA can only be resolved by constructive engagement through state actors on both sides of the diplomatic channel, not unilateral acts,” the ministry said.

The South African government stressed that it remained committed to diplomatic engagement with the United States despite growing differences over a number of political and international issues.

The latest development comes against the backdrop of increasing tensions between Pretoria and Washington.

The two countries have disagreed over several matters, including South Africa’s domestic policies, its approach to international affairs and positions it has taken on major global issues.

South African officials said unilateral measures were unlikely to resolve the underlying disagreements and called for continued dialogue between the two governments.

The visa restrictions are expected to add another layer to the already complex relationship between South Africa and the United States, with both sides facing pressure to manage their differences through diplomatic engagement.

Pretoria maintained that its policies should be understood within the context of its domestic and constitutional framework, while urging the US to engage directly with South African authorities when concerns arise.

The South African government reiterated that constructive state-to-state dialogue remained the appropriate avenue for resolving disputes and strengthening bilateral relations.
