NiMet Issues Three-Day Weather Alert for Thunderstorms, Flood Risk

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast cloudy conditions, thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of Nigeria from Wednesday to Friday.

According to thbe weather outlook released in Abuja on Tuesday, parts of the northern region are expected to experience cloudy skies on Wednesday, with morning thunderstorms and light rainfall in areas of Taraba and Kebbi states.

Later in the day, isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna states.

In the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms and light rainfall are expected over parts of Nasarawa, Niger, Benue and the Federal Capital Territory.

NiMet said most parts of the region could experience thunderstorms and moderate rainfall by afternoon or evening.

Across the southern states, cloudy conditions are expected, with morning rainfall forecast in parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom. Moderate rainfall is expected over most parts of the region later in the day.

For Thursday, NiMet predicted partly cloudy conditions across the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and light rainfall expected in parts of Jigawa, Kano, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe and Kaduna.

By afternoon or evening, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected in Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba states.

The North-Central region is expected to experience sunny conditions with patches of clouds, while parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger and Benue may record morning thunderstorms and light rainfall. Moderate thunderstorms are expected across the region later in the day.

In the South, light rainfall is forecast during the morning in parts of Ondo, Ogun, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, with continued rainfall expected across most areas later in the day.

NiMet also warned of a high risk of flooding in parts of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states during the forecast period.

For Friday, partly cloudy skies are expected across the northern region, with morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall likely in parts of Taraba and Adamawa states.

Thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are also expected in Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa and Taraba states during the afternoon or evening.

In the central region, sunny conditions with patches of clouds are expected, while parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger may experience morning thunderstorms and light rainfall. Most parts of the region could record moderate rainfall later in the day.

The southern region is expected to remain cloudy, with moderate rainfall forecast in parts of Ondo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River during the morning and across most parts of the region later in the day.

NiMet warned that strong winds could occur before thunderstorms and urged residents to take necessary precautions.

The agency advised people in areas prone to flash flooding to activate emergency response measures, avoid driving during heavy rainfall and disconnect electrical appliances from power sources.

Residents were also advised to stay away from tall trees during storms because of the risk of falling branches, while airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather information from NiMet to support pplsafe flight planning.

NiMet encouraged the public to remain alert and regularly follow official weather updates throughout the forecast period.
