Courtois Takes Break From Belgium Squad Ahead of 2027 Return

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has announced that he will temporarily step away from Belgium’s national team and will not take part in the upcoming Nations League campaign.

The 34-year-old, who has made 115 appearances for Belgium, said he intends to make himself available again when the national team begins its European Championship qualifying campaign in September 2027.

Courtois will consequently miss Belgium’s forthcoming Nations League fixtures under new head coach Mark Van Bommel, with the campaign scheduled to begin with a clash against Italy on September 25.

The decision followed discussions between Courtois and Van Bommel over his position within the national team.

The goalkeeper reportedly wanted assurances that he would remain Belgium’s first-choice, but Van Bommel could not guarantee him a starting place.

“I have made the choice not to play the entire Nations League campaign with the Red Devils,” Courtois told Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws.

Despite his decision to step away, Courtois said he could still be available in exceptional circumstances, particularly if Belgium face an injury crisis involving their goalkeepers.

He also made it clear that his absence is not a retirement from international football.

Courtois plans to return for the European Championship qualifiers and compete for the starting position once again.

“If the goalkeeper playing in the Nations League performs well, Van Bommel might continue with him,” he said. “However, I want to fight for my place. I want to prove that I can be the first-choice keeper again.”
Courtois’ decision gives Van Bommel an opportunity to assess other goalkeeping options during the Nations League.

Among the alternatives are Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens and Chelsea youngster Mike Penders, who could be given greater opportunities with the experienced Courtois unavailable.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper has been one of Belgium’s most important players for more than a decade and played a major role during the country’s successful international period.

His temporary absence will therefore provide the new coaching staff with an opportunity to test younger goalkeepers and determine their preferred option ahead of future major competitions.

For Courtois, the decision appears to be aimed at giving him time away from international duty while keeping the door open for a return.

He remains determined to compete for his place when he becomes available again and hopes to re-establish himself as Belgium’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of the Euro 2028 qualifying campaign.
