The United States has announced a $3.5 million (about ₦5 billion) programme to improve the documentation and reporting of religious freedom violations in Nigeria.

The initiative, launched by the US State Department’s Office of International Religious Freedom, will support organisations tracking attacks and abuses linked to religion by both state and non-state actors.

The US cited violence by groups such as Boko Haram, ISIS-West Africa, and armed militias, while also criticising what it described as inadequate responses by Nigerian authorities to attacks on religious communities.

The programme follows President Donald Trump’s decision to designate Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged religious freedom violations in 2025.

Nigeria’s government has rejected claims of religious persecution, maintaining that insecurity affects all citizens regardless of faith.
