The fire broke out early Thursday morning in one of the school dormitories.

Police in Kenya have arrested eight students on suspicion of starting a fire that killed 16 girls and injured 79 others at the Utumishi Girls Academy Senior School in Gilgil.

The fire broke out early Thursday morning in one of the school dormitories.

Investigators say the students are being treated as persons of interest in the suspected arson attack.

Kenyan authorities also revealed that some teachers had reportedly been warned about the alleged plan before the fire but failed to stop it.

Education officials said the school violated safety regulations, including overcrowded dormitories and a locked emergency exit during the incident.

The government has since dissolved the school’s management board and promised legal action against any staff found negligent.
