The suit was filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who is asking the court to declare Jonathan constitutionally ineligible to run for president again.

A Federal High Court in Abuja will today hear a suit seeking to stop former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

The suit was filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who is asking the court to declare Jonathan constitutionally ineligible to run for president again.

Jideobi also wants an order restraining Jonathan from contesting under any political party and stopping the Independent National Electoral Commission, Independent National Electoral Commission, from accepting or publishing his name for the election.

Jonathan, INEC, and the Attorney-General of the Federation are listed as defendants in the case.

The plaintiff is asking the court to determine whether, under Sections 1(1), (2), and (3) as well as Section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution, Jonathan is eligible to contest the presidency again under any circumstance.

According to the suit, Jonathan had already completed the remaining tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua after his death in 2010 and later won a full term in the 2011 election.

In an affidavit, Emmanuel Agida said reports linking Jonathan to the 2027 presidential race prompted the legal action.

He argued that Jonathan has already exhausted the constitutional limit of two presidential tenures, having completed Yar’Adua’s term and served a full elected term of his own.

Agida also warned that if the court does not intervene, a political party could present Jonathan as its candidate for the 2027 election in breach of the Constitution.

He further stated that if Jonathan contests and wins, it would amount to his third time being sworn in as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Agida said the suit was filed in the public interest to uphold the rule of law, defend the supremacy of the Constitution, and preserve the integrity of Nigeria’s constitutional order.
