The clarification followed reactions to his appearance at a swearing-in ceremony for the new Kano deputy governor on Tuesday

Former governor of Kano State and ex-national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has said the Supreme Court will decide the ongoing dispute over the Emir of Kano stool, while clarifying that his public greeting of Muhammadu Sanusi II was not an endorsement of his emirship.

The clarification followed reactions to his appearance at a swearing-in ceremony for the new Kano deputy governor on Tuesday.

At the event, Ganduje referred to Sanusi as the Emir of Kano and chairman of the Kano State Council of Chiefs.

The remark drew attention and applause from dignitaries present.

The development comes amid the long-running dispute over the Kano emirship involving Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero.

Ganduje had deposed Sanusi in March 2020 over alleged insubordination and appointed Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir.

In May 2024, Governor Abba Yusuf reversed the decision, reinstating Sanusi while removing Bayero, a move that triggered fresh legal battles.

The Supreme Court has since adjourned hearing on the matter to April 2027.

In a statement issued by Muhammad Garba, Ganduje’s former Chief of Staff, the ex-governor said his comment at the event was only a gesture of respect.

“It is important to clarify that what happened was simply an expression of respect in a public gathering. It should not be misconstrued as an endorsement,” Ganduje said.

He further stated that he has no legal authority to determine or endorse any claimant to the throne.

Ganduje added that the legal position still recognises both claimants in different capacities pending the final court decision.

“The subsisting legal position recognises Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano and Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 14th Emir, pending the final judgment of the Supreme Court.”

He urged all parties to remain calm and await the final verdict of the apex court.
