Salaam made the allegation in a statement signed by the Director-General of his Campaign Council, Segun Olanibi, a copy of which was obtained in Osogbo on Saturday.

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Osun State, Najeem Salaam, has criticised growing divisions within the labour movement, accusing the Accord and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of worsening disunity for political advantage.

Salaam made the allegation in a statement signed by the Director-General of his Campaign Council, Segun Olanibi, a copy of which was obtained in Osogbo on Saturday.

The reaction followed a parallel May Day celebration organised by a faction of the labour movement, the Association of Concerned Local Government Workers.

The event, held at the Olorunda Local Government Secretariat, Igbona, on Friday, saw participants call on political leaders across local councils to show stronger commitment to workers’ welfare.

The group also directed its members to support APC governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, in the coming election and mobilise for his victory. The celebration featured both formal and informal workers in uniform attire, with several presentations delivered.

Reacting, Salaam described the emergence of politically aligned parallel celebrations as disturbing and capable of undermining workers’ unity.

“Workers’ Day is a moment of solidarity, not separation. It is a day to reflect on the dignity of labour, the struggles of workers, and our shared commitment to a better future,” he said.

“To see workers divided along political lines is both unfortunate and unacceptable.”

He further accused the Accord and APC of exploiting divisions within the labour movement for political gain, warning that such actions weaken workers’ collective bargaining power.

According to him, disunity among workers would only reduce their ability to demand accountability and improved welfare from government.

Salaam, however, pledged that if elected, his administration would protect labour unions from political interference and promote unity within the labour movement.

“My administration will restore unity within the labour movement by creating an enabling environment where workers can organise, engage and advocate freely, without fear or interference,” he said.

He also promised prioritised welfare for workers, including prompt payment of salaries and pensions, alongside a transparent and inclusive engagement system with labour groups.
